Ernest Hemingway is almost as closely associated with drinking as he is with literature. He was a fan of the Mojito, the Death in the Afternoon (absinthe and champagne), and the Daiquiri, which he had adjusted to his taste. He took the drink with twice the rum and none of the sugar.
The most common version of the Hemmingway Daiquiri does use a sweetener however: maraschino liqueur. It tastes nothing like those nuclear-red colored cherries for your sundae, but dry and delicious. The drink also adds grapefruit juice.
Jessica Maria, co-owner of and bartender at the Hotsy Totsy Club in Albany, California, created a version of the Hemingway Daiquiri made with tequila instead of rum. I’m surprised I hadn’t seen the drink before, as tequila and grapefruit are marvelous together. (In Mexico they drink tequila with Squirt, a grapefruit soda. It’s much better than it sounds.)

1.5 fl. oz. Cazadores Blanco Tequila
.25 fl. oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
.75 fl. oz. Fresh Grapefruit
.50 fl. oz. Fresh Lime Juice
Combine all ingredients and shake with ice. Double strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with peel of grapefruit.
