If your holiday spread usually includes simple boiled Brussels sprouts dressed with butter and salt, you’re missing out on an opportunity to showcase this veggie’s potential. In Susie Middleton’s update, lemon zest adds bright flavor to the nutty sprouts. Once you make it for your guests, you’ll never go back.

For another spin on classic Brussels sprouts, see Laura Giannatempo’s post, An Italian Spin on a Thanksgiving Side Dish. But, don’t be fooled by the title, her Brussels sprouts make a great side for any holiday meal. She sautés them in a big skillet and adds caramelized onions and a high-quality Italian vinegar. No nuts, but her version is still crazy-good.

Post your own insanely good recipe update to the Update the Classics Contest for a chance to win Fine Cooking’s 2009 Archive DVD and a $200 girft card from MetroKitchen.com.
