Millstone Farm, Wilton, CT

With a goal that “local food production become the norm rather than the exception,” Millstone Farm, in Wilton, Connecticut, cultivates community along with its pasture-raised meat and poultry (including heritage breeds), vegetables, eggs, and maple syrup. Among the farm’s producers is Eastern Apicultural Society Master Beekeeper Leslie Huston, who tends the hives, gathers the honey, and conducts workshops. Using sustainable agricultural practices, the farm supplies its produce to its own CSA, to local chefs (such as Tim LaBant, of The Schoolhouse at Cannondale, and Bill Taibe of leFarm in Westport), and family-owned markets.

Millstone also runs an apprenticeship program for young farmers, and workshops for the public on such topics as raising backyard chickens, beekeeping, and foraging and cooking with wild edibles. Volunteers from Millstone help feed the hungry through its Team Glean, which harvests excess vegetables from area farms and donates them to food banks.
