What is it?

Salsa, the Mexican word for sauce, refers to a wide range of condiments. Typically, salsas are made from tomatoes with various other ingredients like onions, peppers, hot chiles, and herbs like cilantro. Salsa verde, or green salsa, is made primarily with tomatillos. Some salsas also contain non-traditional ingredients like pineapple, corn, and other fruits and vegetables.

A good selection of jarred salsas, ranging in spiciness from mild to very hot, is available at just about every supermarket.

How to store:

Unopened jarred salsas can be stored at room temperature for about 6 months, but once they’ve been opened, they’ll only keep in the refrigerator for about a month.
