Cherry season is upon us and we are working on some fantastic cherry recipes for next year. When I saw the amount of cherries I’d have to pit, I was a little overwhelmed.  Then Jen, my boss, asked me if I knew where the cherry pitter was.  I told her I’d seen a small handheld one in the kitchen, but she steered me to the Leifheit Cherrymatter.  It was love at first sight.

The premise of the tool is you fill the top bowl with clean, de-stemmed cherries.  The bowl funnels down to a point where one cherry fits, you press down on the lever, and POP! The pit drops down into a bottom bowl and your cherry rolls out into a small bowl that you place under the spout).  It took no time to remove all those pits and it was so much fun in the process.  I just have two warnings: if you get out of control like me and try to go super fast, cherry juice will splatter everywhere. Also you might get a belly ache (like me) from eating too many cherries.

One must be most careful making sure that the pit actually IS removed and falls into the receptacle below. I use mine for sour cherries and they are usually a bit smaller than the sweet cherries. There are always cherry escapees that end up in the bowl without having been pitted. And the cherry feed seems to jam up very easily. Last time I used it I had to check every single cherry for pitlessness. I found many un-extracted. Wouldn't want anyone to break a tooth on my cherry cobbler! Posted: 6:56 pm on July 9th
