Chocolate Orange Ice Cream

This will definitely be something I make for our next dinner party.

  • The zested orange with the juice gave the perfect amount of background orange flavor.

The classic pairing of chocolate and orange made this ice cream so delicious.

Starting with David Lebovitz's basic ice cream recipe, I infused orange zest into the custard.  This gave it a lovely mild orange flavor that you barely noticed but knew there was something special in the custard.  Then, I melted dark chocolate (72%) and added it to the custard with dutch processed cocoa.  When the custard cooled I added some orange juice to it to pump up the orange flavor.

This ice cream is creamy, delicious and elegant.  I can't wait to serve with dessert at our next dinner party.

Denisedr writes: I also love chocolate and orange --there's a fabulous chocolate orange cake by the contessa so I decided to recreate it in icecream.
Used the basic hazelnut chocolate chunk ice cream on this site, INFUSED with rind of 4 oranges and 1 1/2 cups crushed, toasted hazelnuts, ADDED 3/4 cup fresh squeezed OJ, strained, plus 1 tsp orange extract or orange liqueur. Then FOLDED in semi sweet chocolate chunks immediately after churning. Unbelievable! Served with pound cake to rave reviews. Posted: 7:15 pm on July 21st
