Champagne and Shopping Bags

a match made in heaven!

a match made in heaven!

I don't care what anyone says; shopping is tiring. Hard work, even. And there's only so much jostling and jockeying among the throngs of holiday shoppers that this girl can take. I inevitably reach my limit, at which point I say the four magic words:

"Let's get a cocktail."

That's exactly what happened on Sunday when I was shopping with my friend Padma (no, not that Padma). For several hours we had been applying ourselves to the retail cause; then, I started to feel my blood sugar drop and the crankiness set in. Suddenly everyone -- and everything -- was getting on my nerves. I knew I needed a break. So we found the nearest restaurant, plopped down in a booth, and restored ourselves with steak tartare and Champagne cocktails. It felt so civilized to escape to that serene dining room...to leisurely sip on bubbly and enjoy a sophisticated snack. It left me utterly refreshed and able to brave the streets once again.

I've heard the adage of "when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping." But I propose taking it a step further. When the shopping gets tough, the tough drink Champagne!
