I usually make creamy potato salad, but I was late in getting the potatoes started boiling, so I wanted a salad that could be served warm. That settled me on the vinaigrette, then I chose the variant that sounded best and checked my pantry for the ingredients that would most closely approximate it. I used grainy mustard and cider vinegar for the dressing and dill pickles, onion, red peppers, caraway seeds, and hard-boiled eggs for the add-ins.
