Happy National S'mores Day

Want to know a secret? I’ll take National S’mores Day over Valentine’s Day any year, just don’t tell my husband. Why would I pick one perfect square over 25 itty, bitty chocolates with something potentially unappealing inside (but I don’t know it until I get there)? Because a gooey, melty, chocolaty s’mores is a thing of great beauty, because in my quest to identify every dish’s “perfect bite,” there are no imperfect bites when it comes to s’mores. Each corner and the middle (yeah, I’ve got it down to a five-bite system) have a just-right proportion of sugary, sticky goodness.

There aren’t many snacks out there that instantly transport you back to childhood, but a golden, toasted marshmallow committing a graham cracker to a bar of chocolate. . .well, you can understand why I’d prefer it to anything in a heart-shaped box. If you’re looking for an excuse to get the fire pit going tonight, it is National S’mores Day, after all. I hope my husband remembered.

Celebrate with a classic s'mores (no recipe needed, but DO try Yasmin Lozada-Hissom's recipe for Homemade Graham Crackers!) or try one of these delicious takes on a sweet treat worthy of its own holiday:
