Homemade Grenadine and the Jack Rose Cocktail

Like simple syrup, grenadine is an ingredient that should never be bought at the store because it is all-too easy to make at home. Most commercial brands of grenadine are red-colored sugar water, but the real stuff is a flavorful syrup based on pomegranate juice.
You’ll find many a blog post and home recipe for grenadine floating about the internet, including one that adds pomegranate molasses, and a comparison of hot versus cold formulations, but I prefer the simplest recipe: pomegranate juice from the bottle and sugar from the bag. I add a touch of orange flower water that I keep around in case I get a sudden craving for a Ramos Gin Fizz.
Grenadine
Cane sugar
100% Pomegranate juice
Few drops orange flower water
Add equal parts by volume sugar and pomegranate juice to a jar, add a few drops of orange flower water, and shake well until sugar dissolvers. Store in the refrigerator between uses.
Grenadine is used in the Tequila Sunrise, Bacardi Cocktail, and other classic drinks, but to me it is never better than in a Jack Rose. This simple cocktail contains applejack, which is American apple brandy that is delicious and unfortunately often hard to find. The Jack Rose is one of those cocktails that everyone loves (it’s a hit at parties), bringing together people who only want fruity drinks with those who only touch dark liquor. It’s a drink that everyone can agree on.
Jack Rose
2 fl. oz. Applejack
1 fl. oz. Fresh lime juice
.5 fl. oz. Grenadine
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.
