Last weekend my mom and I decided to bake Abby Dodge's Orange Butter Cookies with Grand Marnier Glaze (aka Crêpes Suzette Cookies) together. Despite all of my whining, she refuses to buy a stand mixer and I had to use her dusty old hand mixer to cream the butter and sugar. Oh boy. We spent 20 minutes picking gobs of butter and sugar off the walls—and off of each other. Isn’t that always the way with a hand mixer? Every time I use one it seems that half of the cream jumps way out of the bowl before I even get a glimpse of a soft peak.

Well, there is a solution. On her blog Real Baking with Rose, Rose Levy Beranbaum tested the Mixer Mate Bowl, the latest invention from Gary Fallowes of New Metro Design (who also designed the ingenious Beater Blade), which is designed to keep splatters to a minimum and cut down overall beating time.

It looks a little small but besides that, I’m sold. I think I’m going to buy one for my mom!
