I made two mistakes in this recipe. First, I had only a few of each kind of fruit around the house, so I mixed orange and grapefruit peel in the same syrup-- unfortunately, the grapefruit peel cooked a bit faster than the orange, so I had to pick it out. Second, I didn't drain the peel well enough before adding it to the sugar, so my sugar came out lumpy. However, even with the mistakes, the peel came out great-- now I just have to figure out what to do with it all! Hmm, maybe I should make more fruit cake...
