As May arrives and winter finally decides to leave after overstaying its welcome, I'm more than ready to trade warming, one-pot meals and rich desserts for something lighter, brighter, and fresh. When it comes to cooking inspiration, my brain is solar-powered; every year like clockwork, I shop myself giddy at the farmer's market once the temperatures start to climb, inspecting the asparagus with a stupid-happy grin on my face. Extra hours of sunlight and time outdoors leave me chopping away in the kitchen at the end of the day, tossing and tinkering with my spectrum of first-of-the-season produce like a love-struck piano player to her keys. My best cooking self comes alive in the spring and summer, and from the looks of my Google Reader, some great bloggers are feeling the same.

But this season, there's a specific dish on display: strawberry shortcake. I'm seeing it everywhere across the blogosphere, from posts celebrating a classic family recipe to those featuring fantastically outlandish and whimsical renditions.

While homemade Pop-Tarts seemed to be the "little black dress" of baking experimentation in the autumn, strawberry shortcake has stepped up to the plate as the It-dessert of this season. And we're totally on  board here at FC—just look at the June/July issue, where we've dedicated our Classic/Classic Update to it. In one corner, we have Karen Barker's timeless classic, with tender biscuits, billowy whipped cream, and ruby red, impossibly sweet strawberries. In the other, we have Christina Tosi's layer cake of epic proportions with a modern, unexpected twist.

If these aren't enough to get you craving some shortcake, too, I've compiled several inspiring interpretations of strawberry shortcake from a few favorite bloggers. Watch the Best of the Blogs Strawberry Shortcake slideshow.
