How to Scrape a Vanilla Bean

By Jennifer Armentrout, editor

July 5th, 2011

Almost every recipe that includes fresh vanilla beans calls for splitting the beans lengthwise and scraping out the sticky seed pulp with a paring knife. To do this, use the back of the knife, not the blade. This way, you won’t shave inedible strands of the bean pod into the seeds as you scrape.
