I have a new obsession and her name is Kath. Kath is a Registered Dietitian with a blogging habit. Luckily, she has amazing healthy-eating tips that apply all year round, not just after the holidays. Her blog, Kath Eats Real Food is all about her daily routine of exercise, eating right and having fun doing it.
One of the best ideas I've come across in a while is the "SIAB." Kath's brainchild, "SIAB" stands for smoothie-in-a-bowl. This is a genius idea. Kath makes a great point of how although delicious, smoothies are just not satisfying for breakfast. You gulp them down and in a few minutes...gone!
Hence the SIAB was born, a blend of oats, fruit, yogurt, milk, ice and other amazing toppings. The idea behind this bowl-o-plenty is that it's much more satisfying (and takes longer) to eat a smoothie the same way you would a bowl of soup. The textural contrasts from the fresh fruit, crunchy nuts and seeds and creamy nut butters make a SIAB not only filling but satisfying to eat.
She has even come up with the Dough Boy Smoothie, which starts with a mixture of wet and dry ingredients including oats. You let the mixture soak in the fridge overnight and in the morning, blend it up. Kath says that the result is an incredibly doughy concoction that is sure to make you think you're eating a not-so-healthy pastry instead of a nutritious breakfast.
Did I mention the possibilities are endless? Over Thanksgiving weekend she made one with pumpkin, rolled oats, yogurt, milk, ice and spices and garnished it with granola clusters, coconut and a drizzle of peanut butter. Kath is smart in that she always tops a big SIAB with a drizzle of something sweet. She even makes them with veggies!
SIABs are the perfect way to get your eating back on track after a calorie bomb like Thanksgiving and as we all know, starting the day off with a well-balanced meal will keep you fueled throughout the day, giving you the ability to say no to all those workplace treats that always seem to sneak up no matter how hard you avoid them.
