After a surprisingly mild winter, the weather is finally starting to stick to its warmer temperatures on a more regular basis. For me, this means that those picnics, barbeques and various other outdoor eating events are on their way. While beer and canned soda might be your go-to beverages at parties like this, keep in mind that there are so many other options when it comes to deciding what beverages to serve at your next warm-weather event.
This homemade soda achieves its sweet-tart, herbal flavor profile from a mix of fresh blackberries and raspberries, lemon juice and zest, fresh thyme and water boiled together to make one heck of a syrup. Casey also uses pomegranate molasses, honey and sugar to sweeten the mixture after the syrup has been infused with the fruit and herbs.
The nice thing about this soda is that you don’t need a home carbonator in order to make it. If, like me, you don’t have one lying around, the solution is simple. All you have to do is pour the syrup into seltzer water. If you add the syrup an ounce at a time, you can make the soda as sweet (or not) as you want.
This is a great beverage to serve to both adults and kids at your next outdoor shindig. Something tells me it’d taste pretty darn delicious with a splash of vodka or gin, but even if you decide to keep things PG, this soda will add a fresh pop of flavor to any springtime meal. Cheers to that!
