Win Melissa Clark's Must-Have Kitchenware

Food writer Melissa Clark's Brooklyn kitchen was designed with her family and her work in mind. Four years ago, in preparation for her daughter's birth, Melissa worked with Brooklyn-based Kraft Studio to create a space that was safe, well-organized, luminous, and family-friendly. Melissa is constantly inspired by her kitchen, and we're betting it'll inspire you, too.

Watch the tour to see how it turned out.

Melissa prepares thousands of recipes a year for various book projects, as well as for A Good Appetite, her column in the New York Times, but even if you prepare only hundreds (slacker?), your experience will be that much more enjoyable using the tools Melissa and 4-year-old budding cook, Dahlia, use on a daily basis.

Leave a comment below for your chance to win Melissa's favorite kitchenware. (Now closed)

Update: Congrats to Touchofhaze. Her comment was selected at random so she'll be sipping coffee out of handmade mugs this Mother's Day.

user-778445 writes: Love your kitchen! And thank you for going over the workflow plan of your kitchen -- just what I needed! I hadn't thought of putting all of the food supplies, refrigerator, etc., on one side and the food cooking areas on the other! I wish more cooks would share how their kitchen workflow is organized. This will help so much as I try to get a better workflow in my own kitchen. I also have been looking for a vent hood that actually is strong enough to pull the steam, odors away effectively. Have tried a few with not much improvement.

And, love those pull out drawers for your food pantry! Thanks so much for sharing! Posted: 11:19 am on May 8th

I few things caught my eye and I was really excited by them.
I loved the drying rack and the 'phone cradle.
I was so envious of all the shelves for the cookbooks. I have had to send all of mine to the basement shelves until I reno my kitchen.
I love the colours too, especially of the cabinets. Are they easy to clean ?
My pantry is just as you described your old and I'll be replacing mine with pullout shelving too.
I hope with my renovation, I can reclaim my coat closet in the living room, as I had to install shelves to store the appliances and things like my big roasting pan and stock pots
Great kitchen and great ideas! I'll be borrowing some of those ideas for my new kichen.
Many Thanks ! Posted: 5:43 pm on May 7th

marilyn188 writes: The pull out pantry is something I've been yearning for forever. Plus, the organization of cooking on one side of the island and storage on the other makes total sense. I wish I had seen this video when we were renovating. What do you have for flooring? Where did you find your sink? Here, in Canada, there is a limit to finding such treasures. We, too have our table next to the window overlooking our garden. Ohhh, how I wish I could have included some of your ideas. Do you have a micro-wave? Didn't see one. I use mine a lot. What kind of stove do you have? Is that a Wolf also? Do you make pastry directly on your marble island? I'd love to share some cooking time with you in your kitchen for that is the only way the details that weren't covered in the video will emerge. The glass juice squeezer is the same as the one I used to squeeze the juice for the family every morning. I just love what you've done. Can I come for a visit? Posted: 9:01 am on May 7th

I am a personal chef, and had never seen a butter keeper like this until recently, at a new clients home - what a great invention. leaftea98 writes: People interested in the butter bell: these do work. I'd recommend them for uses where you want to keep the butter spreadable (and fresh :-) ).

Norpro makes some nice products, but you might want to consider the Emile Henry glazed ceramic ones, despite being somewhat more expensive. They come in a lot of nice colors, but more important the shape of the "bell" works better: it's narrower at the open end, so the butter is less likely to fall out.

Disclaimer: not affiliated in any way with the Emile Henry company. Other than having bought their butter bell. :-) Posted: 1:11 pm on March 28th

I also desperately need a blender - I recently threw out the one I received for my wedding as it was a piece of junk (my fault - I didn't research thoroughly). My food processor currently is doing double duty as a blender. I'd love one that someone else has used and knows works well! As much as I'd love to splurge on a Vitamix, I think my husband would probably divorce me if I spent that much on a blender! :)

I waste hours reaching into deep, dark cupboards searching for poorly-placed dry goods that I need and use every day. I find most items by feeling around blindly for the right-shaped can. Luckily, gone are the days of serving frozen dinners to our family and parents are spending more time in the kitchen preparing meals.

Love your choice of must-haves for the kitchen, especially the handmade mugs of Alice Goldsmith. The colors are dreamlike and her work is pure poetry. Her mug would make one’s morning cup of coffee or after dinner tea truly special. KimZee writes: I think it is very important to think about your personal cooking style and your families needs when designing a kitchen. I have never personally understood the trend to have cabinets that only go partially up the wall; I think this was simply an effort to save money on the builders end, that wrongfully caught on. I mean seriously who does not need extra storage space!?!?!? I have a very small house (800 square feet) and my kitchen table is a round butcher block table, that is an extension of my counters. My table reflects the history of my home and my kitchens life; it is the unwritten history of my family. Your kitchen is beautiful and well engineered for your personal work needs and the your entire family that lives in your home; a merger of work and family needs is a rare accomplishment to meet.
