Welcome to Homegrown/Homemade. I'm a cook who needs some help in the garden and Fine Gardening's Danielle Sherry is a gardener who needs some help in the kitchen. We've teamed up to show gardeners and cooks of all skill levels how get the most out of their crops from seed to plate. Here, we're growing and cooking one of my all-time favorites: Strawberries.
Episode Two: How to Care for Strawberries
Danielle convinces me that the best thing I can do for my strawberry plants a month after planting is to pluck off their blossoms for six weeks so the plants gain strength and become well established. It's a little depressing, but it's necessary if I want an abundant crop for years to come. Danielle also explains what runners are and offers up the perfect solution to my disappointment. Replanting the runners means even more strawberries later. I'm in.
