Chinese five-spice powder
A warm and fragrant spice blend common in Chinese cuisine. It's typically composed of star anise, cloves, fennel seed, cinnamon, and Sichuan peppercorns. Licorice root and ginger are also components of some recipes.
You can also grind your own five-spice powder from whole spices, although some of the components are as hard to find as five-spice powder itself. The advantage of making it yourself is that, like all freshly ground spices, it will be more potent than its pre-ground counterpart.
Some well-stocked supermarkets carry five-spice powder (McCormick sells a version). Or check at an Asian market.
