Deborah Madison grew up surrounded by good food-literally-first on a dairy farm in upstate New York and then in a walnut orchard in Davis, California. It's no surprise, then, that she's devoted her career to connecting people to the food they eat through her cooking, cookbooks (Vegetable Literacy and The New Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone are her latest), and classes.

Northern New Mexico has been Deborah's home for more than 20 years now. Her warm, sunny kitchen there was designed to make efficient use of a small space, but it also celebrates the locale in its architecture and décor, reflecting Deborah's passion for all things local and sustainable.

In this Behind the Kitchen Door tour, Deborah describes how she used traditional Southwestern materials and vibrant color to make her New Mexico kitchen feel like home.
