Onion Goggles
comments (5) January 29th, 2009 in BlogsI am ultra sensitive when it comes to chopping onions, and not to mention shallots, leeks and even sometimes garlic. I actually start welling up at just the thought of cutting them. I thought I’d tried every trick out there--lighting a candle, chewing gum, or running the onion under cold water, to name a few--but nothing stopped the free flow of tears and red, burning eyes. Then one year I got a pair of funny looking goggles in my Christmas stocking, and they weren’t for skiing. According to the package, they were “onion goggles.” Here we go, I thought. Another kitchen gadget to clutter the drawers. Then one night, craving French onion soup, I set out to thinly slice a bunch of onions, and then it hit me - try the onion goggles. Finally, not a single tear shed! At first I was a little vain and didn’t want to be caught dead wearing them, but then I thought red swollen eyes, or kind of funky goggles.

I have too many kitchen tools, many I hardly ever use, but the one I use the most and would never be without is my onion goggles. I used to shy away from using onions in my recipes or beg my husband to cut them for me, but now I use onions in almost every thing and without fear. My goggles are my favorite kitchen tool by far.
