Re:Braised Duck Legs with Figs, Star Anise, and Winter Squash

Rendering the duck fat from the legs results in a lot of fat, mess and smell before guests arrive. I found this dish just okay -- the spices a little underwhelming, too many figs. Typically, most Fine Cooking recipes are pretty close to flawless. The guests enjoyed it and some had seconds but I found it to be lackluster.

Re:Warm Berries and Nectarines with Mascarpone

Wow. This was a little like having a delicious pie filling for breakfast. It was delicious with just the fruit but the mascarpone really put it over the top. I think it would make a great light dessert too.

Re:Spicy Red Lentil Dal with Lamb and Vegetables

Unfortunately, the seasonings are off with this recipe. Five teaspoons of garam masala are excessive since garam masala typically has a high proportion of aromatics (cinammon, cardamom, cloves)among its ingredients. This recipe might be better with different seasonings and whole spices (cumin, fennel seeds) instead of powdered spices.
