Five-Spice-Glazed Salmon with Sesame Green Beans

Chinese five-spice powder, honey, and soy sauce create a tasty glaze for this simple salmon dish. Broil the green beans and salmon on the same baking sheet, and you have a meal in minutes. Serves 4

1/4 cup honey
4 tsp. reduced-sodium soy sauce
1-1/2 tsp. five-spice powder
2 large cloves garlic, minced
Four 6-oz. skin-on salmon fillets (preferably wild), pin bones and scales removed
Nonstick cooking spray
1 lb. slender green beans, trimmed
2 tsp. canola oil
1 tsp. Asian sesame oil
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 Tbs. toasted sesame seeds
1 tsp. lemon juice

In a small bowl, whisk the honey, soy sauce, five-spice powder, and garlic. Put the salmon skin side down on a large plate and pour the honey mixture over it. Flip the fillets so they are skin side up. Let the fish marinate for 15 minutes at room temperature.

Position a rack 6 inches from the broiler and heat the broiler on high. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with foil and coat with cooking spray.

In a large bowl, toss the green beans with the canola and sesame oils. Arrange the beans on one half of the prepared baking sheet and season with salt and pepper. Arrange the salmon skin side down on the other half of the baking sheet. Brush the salmon with any remaining marinade from the plate.

Broil the salmon and green beans for 3 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven, toss the green beans with tongs, and reposition the salmon pieces as needed so that they cook evenly. Continue to broil until the salmon is just cooked through and the beans are crisp-tender, 2 to 3 minutes. Toss the green beans with the sesame seeds and lemon juice and serve.

Serving Suggestions

Serve with a simple Basmati Rice or Five-Treasure Fried Rice.

Star Star Star Star Star Just made this for dinner and both the salmon and the green beans were absolutely delicious. My husband and I both loved both dishes. Super easy to make with a clearly explained recipe. I disagree with a previous reviewer that the marinade is too sweet. Not at all! The saltiness of the soy sauce and the spiciness of the Chinese 5 spice and garlic balance the sweetness of the honey very well, and we both thought it was just right. The only change I will make when I prepare this recipe again will be to broil the green beans for about 3 min. before adding the salmon to the pan. For my taste, the green beans were a bit raw when cooked the same amount of time as the salmon, and I had to give them additional time after plating the salmon. I like al dente beans, but this wasn't even al dente. However, that being said, the cooking time for the salmon was exactly right. I think it is a crime to dry salmon out, and this recipe produced deliciously flaky, moist, and fork-perfect salmon. Definitely a keeper!
Star Star Star Star Star I made this with allspice instead of Chinese 5 spice (since I didn't have any) & it turned out great. Very quick and easy.. and so little clean up! I definitely recommend this dish.
Star Star Star Star Star Made this dish last night and it was wonderful. I did broil the whole dish a little longer than recommended. I added a minute more for the first time and two minutes after stirring the green beans. I did keep an eye on it though. Overall, easy and delicious, can't beat that!
Star Star Star Star Star My family loved the green beans as well as the salmon. Quick and delicious.
Star Star Star Star Star I liked this recipe as did the others but I did not love it. I thought that the flavours were nice but the marinade was a little too sweet. It was popular so I would try it again but cut down on the honey.
Star Star Star Star Star Ivy Manning does it again! Served this last night with basmati rice, and my husband loved it. Since ovens and salmon varies, keep an eye on the process. Mine took 7 minutes total instead of 6. Easy dinner and easy cleanup..... delicious!
Star Star Star Star Star Delicious, easy and quick clean-up. What could be better? I agree with other reviewers that the fish takes longer to cook than the recipe indicates. Like others, I popped it in the microwave for a couple minutes and voila! Thanks to those reviewers who preceded me for their helpful tips.
Star Star Star Star Star High marks for this one. I agree with the reviews that the salmon may need a minute or two longer depending on thickness. If it is thinner sockeye, the timing is probably right on. The glaze is really tasty and the green beans get all wrinkly and a little browned. Delicious. This is a great dish for entertaining because it is all cooked at the same time and on foil so there's no mess and not many dirty dishes. I made rice and a roasted delicata squash on the side. I will be making this often.
Star Star Star Star Star Used Maple Syrup instead of honey - fantastic results. Quick, easy and the kids love it!
Star Star Star Star Star Phenomenal quick dish, rich in flavor and super easy to make! Perfect meal for more than 4 people.
Star Star Star Star Star The honey in the marinade is complemented by the garlic, soy and 5-spice and they all work together to enhance the flavor of the salmon. A very tasty dish. Read my entire review at: http://themomchef.blogspot.com/2010/11/five-spice-glazed-salmon-with-sesame.html
Star Star Star Star Star I prefer to bake my salmon at 450 so I brushed the glaze on in the last few minutes of cooking to avoid it from burning. A nice simple flavor combination I'm sure I will use again.
Star Star Star Star Star Loved the green beans, but did not care for the salmon. I found the honey overpowering and really too sweet. I believe it caused the fish to poach instead of broil. I agree with others the temp of the oven should be higher and perhaps a little longer cooking time.
Star Star Star Star Star if you follow the instructions as a chemistry recipe, the results are going to be great!!!!
Star Star Star Star Star I, too, found this to be a wonderful and easy recipe. Made it as written and loved the ways the different flavors went together. I found the salmon needed a bit more time, but was expecting it, so not an issue. LOVED the green beans! One pan cooking was a plus!
Star Star Star Star Star I enjoyed this; my husband loved it. I appreciate recipes that can be easily cut down to 2 servings. I made it as written and used half of all measures, except for the soy sauce. I used 3 tsp instead of 2 for half the recipe because I wanted a little more salt to contrast the sweet. Cooking took a little longer than indicated--I just broiled for another minute or 2 rather than microwaving. I was surprised to find that I didn't have to sprinkle the beans with salt to improve their flavor. They were good without it.
Star Star Star Star Star I made this today and it is a keeper. We really enjoyed it, but like the others, I cooked it longer than it called for, and we didn't have thick salmon. So my advice is to judge the cooking time according to your fish and how hot your oven gets.
Star Star Star Star Star A good easy meal. Broiling green beans-why had I not heard of this before-cooked and tender without being mushy. Learning a new technique is cool. The salmon was very sweet;good for me who is borderline about liking salmon-but it may be a tad too sweet for some. Both recipes needed a pinch of salt to be at their best.
Star Star Star Star Star Flavorful and fast! Salmon needs a pinch of salt and like the other reviewer, needs a minute in the microwave to cook through. Otherwise, this was delicious!
Star Star Star Star Star This is a delicious and easy recipe. I found that my fish internal temperature wasn't quite where it should be by the end of the recommended broiling time (150-155 degrees using an instant read thermometer). It has nice caramelization by then, however, so I just microwaved the filets for 1-2minutes to get the temp up and they were perfect. Moist, flavorful and done in no time. I highly recommend trying this recipe.
