The Last Word is a cocktail most likely created during Prohibition by bartender Frank Fogarty at the Detroit Athletic Club. It contains the unlikely combination of very flavorful liqueurs, Chartreuse and maraschino, which somehow come into balance when gin and lime juice are added. The drink is quite potent but not as much of a flavor bomb as it appears. Furthermore, with equal portions of all ingredients, the recipe is very easy to remember.

In classic cocktail circles, The Last Word has become almost like the Mojito. Everyone has had the drink a million times so now bartenders are putting their own spin on the drink, making variations by substituting ingredients in the recipe. We can find The Final Word (made with rye whiskey instead of gin and lemon instead of lime), the Word to Your Mom (made with genever instead of gin, plus beer), The Other Word (mezcal), The Eulogy (Batavia Arrack instead of gin, falernum instead of maraschino), The Gypsy, replacing maraschino with St. Germain, and many other drinks.

At this rate, it is doutbful anyone will have the last word on the Last Word.

The Last Word

0.75 fl. oz. Gin
0.75 fl. oz. Green Chartreuse
0.75 fl. oz. Maraschino Liqueur (Not Maraschino Cherry ‘Juice’)
0.75 fl. oz. Lime Juice

Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

    Heads up, the rye-and-lemon variant is called a Final Ward, not Final Word. It's named after renowned bartender Phil Ward, who created it.
