Welcome to Homegrown/Homemade. I’m a cook who needs some help in the garden and Fine Gardening‘s Danielle Sherry is a gardener who needs some help in the kitchen. We’ve teamed up to show gardeners and cooks of all skill levels how get the most out of their crops from seed to plate.

In this installment, Danielle and I take on basil.

Recipe Demo: Classic Basil Pesto
Basil is Danielle’s favorite herb, but it can be difficult to cook with because it starts wilting the second you pick it and it can even turn black, making dishes that incorporate basil look unappetizing. I’ve got a few cook’s tricks to share that’ll help keep basil fresh longer. I also show her how to make Classic Basil Pesto and give her some tips for its long-term storage.
