Welcome to Homegrown, Homemade. I’m a cook who needs some help in the garden and Fine Gardening‘s Danielle Sherry is a gardener who needs some help in the kitchen. We’ve teamed up to show gardeners and cooks of all skill levels how get the most out of their crops from seed to plate.
Episode Four: How to Harvest Tomatoes
In this video, Danielle shows me how to test for optimum ripeness using my senses. She tells me to look for great color, sniff to detect that tomato smell (immature tomatoes don’t smell like anything at all), and she shows me how to apply her squishabilty test, Danielle’s official term for squeezing the tomato and judging the indentations. Even Juno gets involved in the fun here. We end up with a nice big bowl of colorful tomatoes we’ll really appreciate in the next video when we use our sense of taste.
