Welcome to Homegrown/Homemade. I’m a cook who needs some help in the garden and Fine Gardening‘s Danielle Sherry is a gardener who needs some help in the kitchen. We’ve teamed up to show gardeners and cooks of all skill levels how get the most out of their crops from seed to plate.
In this series Danielle teaches me how to plant squash and think like a bee. Later, I’ll show Danielle how to cook squash in a tasty side that isn’t a wash-out and we’ll bake a delicious chocolate zucchini bread.
Episode One: How to Plant Squash
Danielle and Juno give the garden the bare-feet test and determine the soil is warm enough to plant squash. When I start a mound, Danielle explains why the best method for planting squash is around a plastic nursery pot, which will serve as a watering reservoir. While the plants are young, I’ll water them directly, but once the seeds germinate, the pots will allow me to get water to the roots.
