Welcome to Homegrown/Homemade. I’m a cook who needs some help in the garden and Fine Gardening‘s Danielle Sherry is a gardener who needs some help in the kitchen. We’ve teamed up to show gardeners and cooks of all skill levels how get the most out of their crops from seed to plate. In this series, Danielle convinces me that planting and growing onions is well worth the effort, so I give it a try.

Episode Four: How to Preserve & Store Onions
Onions keep so well and are such a kitchen staple, you may not think about preserving or storing them. But if you have onions that aren’t curing as they should, use them up right away by making a batch of caramelized onions to top burgers, pasta, pizza, or in French Onion Soup. The Fine Cooking recipe gives instructions for homemade beef broth, but in a pinch, store bought broth is fine-especially if like me and Danielle, you’re aiming to pull the soup together in about 10 minutes. I also skipped the sugar because my homegrown onions were plenty sweet already.
