We always knew we had the best readers around, but Linda Smith from Newtown, Ohio, takes the cake (or the cookie, as it were). On December 16, 2012, Linda, a long-time reader, won the prize offered up on Abby Dodge’s Must-Have Baking Tools Giveaway post. Upon learning Fine Cooking’s headquarters are in Newtown, Connecticut, Linda immediately asked if she could donate her prize or its value to the families affected by the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

That wasn’t possible, so Linda got another idea: She spearheaded a cookie sale she called “Newtown, Ohio Helping Newtown, Connecticut.”

Using her prizes, including a KitchenAid Stand Mixer she says came in very handy, Linda, with the help of friends Tracy Keller and Kim Kassoff from Lobsta Bakes of Maine, baked more than 4,000 Ginger Crackles (one of Abby Dodge’s signature cookies).

Linda raised almost $3,000 and donated the money to The Taunton Press Newtown Children and Families Fund, a fund which works collaboratively with service providers, schools, government agencies and other organizations to help ensure the health, well-being and safety of children and families in the Newtown area.

Linda, you’ve inspired all of us here on the staff of Fine Cooking and the entire Taunton Press. Thank you. For every cookie you baked, thank you.
