Though Phantom Thread is one of the best food movies of the year, the way the tumultuous relationship of Alma (Vicky Krieps) and Reynolds (Daniel Day-Lewis) plays out in their meals may make it a bit tough to stomach some of the more pivotal dishes (mushroom omelet, anyone?). But this breakfast menu, inspired from the characters’ first meeting, should inspire a little more trust from your guests. Round out the meal with poached eggs, jam and cream for the scones, and a pot of lapsang souchong tea.

  • Make the sausage (you can substitute store-bought sausages if you prefer).

1 Hour Ahead

  • Make and bake the scones.

30 Minutes Ahead

  • Make the rarebit cheese sauce.

15 Minutes Ahead

  • Cook the bacon and sausages.
  • Assemble the rarebits and broil.
  • Poach the eggs.
